Blog 16: Independent Component 2 Approval

1. Describe in detail what you plan to do for your 30 hours.
What I plan on doing is making flyer for individual animals. But I will not do them by hand I will do them on the computer. I will post them on social media's like Instagram and twitter etc. My goal is to at least get one animal from the shelter adopted. I also plan on taking pictures of them and record them and also post it on social media.

2. Discuss how or what you will do to meet the expectation of showing 30 hours of evidence.
What I will do is get around 4 or 5 animals a week and create these flyers and post them in social media's. The flyers would probably take around 2 or 3 hours to make perfect.

3. Explain how this component will help you explore your topic in more depth.
This component will help me explore my topic a bit more because I get to see the process of trying to get these animals adopted. I really want to get an animal adopted with my hard work. I will also talk to the other volunteers that take part in the Glamour Shots (they take photos and videos of dogs and post them on social media) and might also help them.

Blog 15: Independent Component 1

  • LITERAL
    (a) Write: “I, Sabrina Velez, affirm that I completed my independent component which represents 34 hours of work.”
    (b) Cite your source regarding who or what article or book helped you complete the independent component. There was no actual source that helped me complete my independent component. My independent component was more hands on work.
  • INTERPRETIVE
Defend your work and explain its significance to your project and how it demonstrates 30 hours of work.   Provide evidence (photos, transcript, art work, videos, etc) of the 30 hours of work.

These photos are from the different events that I went to and I got 12 hours. But for following pictures are apart of mentorship I got the rest of my hours 18 hours by doing extra mentorship hours. I really dont have time to be using my phone when I mentor thats why their arent as many pictures.

I still have more pictures but I don't want to overwhelm my post with a lot of pictures. I will probably post another blog post with all of my pictures.
How did the component help you understand the foundation of your topic better?  Please include specific
examples to illustrate this. This component actually helped me answer my EQ!!! At first I wasn't sure if it would be helpful but my independent component lead the way to my first answer. This component helped my answer my question because at my shelter they promote animals like the way my research said it should be done. By the way my EQ is "what is the best strategy a shelter can employ that will improve the chances that it's animals get adopted?" and my answer was "The best strategy is to promote individual animals". This helped my understand my topic better because my shelter promoted individual animals and they actually had different kinds of pet adopts that basically got most of the animals adopted.

Blog 14: Lesson 2 Reflection

1.What are you most proud of in your Lesson 2 Presentation and why?
I am proud with the outcome of my activity. The reason I am proud is because some people actually tried and some wanted to even keep the flyer that they made. Some people actually posted some in classrooms.

2. a. What assessment would you give yourself on your Lesson 2 Presentation (self-assessment)?
The grade I would give myself is a P.
    b. Explain why you deserve that grade using evidence from the Lesson 2
The reason I deserve a P is because I hit all the points I had to hit on the rubric. I am also glad that I did better with my volume  because in my last presentation I didn't really speak as loud.

3. What worked for you in your Lesson 2?
What worked for me is the activity. This worked for me because people actually loved it and wanted to post the flyers to help those homeless dogs :')

4. What didn't work? If you had a time machine, what would you have done differently to improve your Lesson 2?
I feel like I should have add more information to my presentation because I only hit 9 mins for my lecture. But when I practiced my lecture time was 12 minutes. I feel like this might have happened because I left somethings out and was talking at a quicker pace.

5. What do you think your answer #2 is going to be?
I think my answer two is going to be " costumer service". This is crucial to answering my question because if the costumer service is terrible people are not going to want to adopt and animals. If the employees are rude no one is going to want to get into problems with them.

Third Interview Preparation

1.  Who do you plan to interview?  What is this person's area of expertise?
I plan on interviewing one of the sergeants or one of the volunteers. The volunteers may have more experience but that's about it. But the sergeant are usually the head of the shelter so they have to have a lot more work experience than most at the shelter.
2. Verify that you have called your interviewee to schedule an interview.  What is the date and time of the interview? I have not called to schedule an interview but I am going to try and schedule one this weekend.
3.  Phrase an open-ended question that will help you find research resources that would help to answer the EQ. What are some of the other ways shelters around the U.S. get animals adopted?
Why is this way effective?
4.  Phrase an open-ended question that will help you think about other useful activities you might do to help you answer the EQ
Do pet adopts get pet people to adopt animals quicker?
Are events any different than just adopting an animal at the shelter?
Phrase two open-ended questions that help you to understand your interviewee's perspective on an aspect of your EQ.
How do you get so many animals adopted?
Do you know any other techniques that may get animals adopted

Blog 13: 10 Hour Mentorship Check-In

1.   Where are you doing your mentorship?
I am doing my mentorship at the Baldwin Park animal shelter.
2.   Who is your contact?  What makes this person an expert?
My contact is Jiame Ramos. He is an expert because he has been working at the shelter for years and the years before that he worked with animals as well.
3.   How many hours have you done during the school year?
      I have done 49 hours.
4.   Succinctly summarize what you did, how well you and your mentor worked together, and how you plan to complete the remaining hours
I usually help with dogs at the shelter since they do make up the majority of the shelter. Me and my mentor work pretty well but he can be a bit socially awkward. I plan on finishing my hours there at the shelter or maybe another shelter.

Holiday Project Update

It is important to consistently work on your senior project, whether it is break or we are in school.  What did you do over the break with your senior project?
Over break I just did a little more research online. I wanted to do more mentorship time but I couldn't since I am out of the country.

What was the most important thing you learned from what you did, and why?  What was the source of what you learned? One thing I did learned is most countries around the world do not care for homeless animals. There is only a few that do. For example Costa Rica was the first in Latin america to become a "No-Kill nation", they outlawed euthanasia as a form of animal in 2003. Costa Rica is one of the FOUR countries around the world that care for homeless animals. So ever since I got to colombia I have seen a homeless dog every single day. I have seen it in Mexico as well but it just goes to show that most do not care. I think most countries do not care is because they are third world countries.

Your third interview will be a 10 question interview related to possible answers for your EQ. Who do you plan to talk to and why? For my third interview I plan on interviewing someone that either volunteers or works at a "no-kill' shelter.

Blog 11: Lesson 1 Reflection

1. what are you most proud of in your lesson, and why?
To be honest, I am not proud of the way I presented my lesson. I felt like I could have done a bit better.
2. what assessment would give yourself on your lesson? Explain why earned this grade using your evidence from the component contract.
The assessment I would give myself is an AP probably lower. The reason why I would give myself is grade because in the "professionalism" section it says that the presenter should have volume/enunciation and I feel that I did terrible on that part.
3. If you could go back, what would you change about your lesson? How can you use that knowledge to give a better lesson 2.
I felt like me lesson 1 was planned right but I did not really practice in front of people. So when I get a bit nervous and tend to just speak without knowing what I am saying. So it's not that my lesson plan wasn't planned right, it was more if the practicing with an audience.
